Where does this feeling come from?

Have you ever had the feeling that no matter what you do, nothing will ever be enough? That there will always be another achievement to achieve, another thing to have, another challenge to experience. It's called life and it is always going to be like that, there will always be something more. When we fall into a monotonous lifestyle and the illusion of pursuing what will bring us happiness, we will soon realize that there is always something more. Once you have what you wanted you will again be in the place where something is missing, the next thing is missing, and when you get to that, the next thing will be missing, and then the next thing, and it will never end. You could live your whole life like this, chasing and chasing, without realizing that life is slipping through your fingers and that one day it will end. One day you will no longer have the energy to chase, and you will only be able to wonder if you really lived or just chased, because it will be too late to do anything. It is common that when we are goal-oriented and have ambitions, we always have something on the list to achieve. Sometimes in the desire to achieve we forget to live, that is where we must find a balance. A balance between working to have a better tomorrow and at the same time managing to live today; without waiting for everything to be perfect to really live. Emotions are generated internally, it is true that the external world has influence due to the way we interact and react to it, but discomfort or satisfaction is always generated from within. Achievements and material things can give you a moment of satisfaction, a release of dopamine. It is true that they can contribute to personal satisfaction, but this will only last for a moment. Once we achieve something, it loses value and we aim to achieve the next thing due to our competitive nature, so this source of satisfaction becomes unsustainable over time. Since what we want will always vary depending on how our thinking changes, if we let our personal desires and chievements depend on the material world, the result will render unstable and will most likely fall very soon.

The only way for our personal satisfaction to remain over time is for its foundation to come from within and not only depend on what is achieved externally. To connect with our inner self, we must learn to listen to ourselves and connect with the ordinary, with everyday life, that is the constant that will always be present in our lives.

We feel that nothing is enough when our gaze is on the future, when we forget to be present in our daily lives and be grateful for what we are experiencing, for thinking about the next thing we want to achieve. It is important to have clear goals, but it is also important to be grateful for what you already have. A big event doesn't have to happen for you to be grateful for it and enjoy your day. Surely there are things you experience right now that you used to pray for or dreamed about. Remember the moments when you wished for what you have now and give yourself the gift of enjoying it. When you feel disconnected from reality and dissatisfied with it, forget for a moment about all your desires and do the exercise of connecting with the moment, whatever it is that you are living.

EXERCISE:

When you feel exhausted or dissatisfied, let go of the pressures of the day for a moment, forget for a moment the list of achievements you have, dissipate the focus on what you are missing and concentrate on the small details of the day. Connect with the present through your body sensations, pay close attention to what you see, hear, smell, feel, taste. Connect with your reality through your senses. Receive your reality just as you are living it, taste it. Try to see your reality through a look of wonder, as if you were new to earth and experiencing this for the first time.

  • Feel how the sun warms your skin, listen to the sounds of the city, feel how the breeze touches your skin, taste the first sip of water or coffee of the day.

  • When you are about to eat, remember that what is happening is a miracle; that in addition to savoring it, that food will give you energy to be alive and accomplish the tasks of the day. Get ready to taste, enjoying every bite with complete focus.

  • When you go for a walk, bring awareness to the movement your legs make, thank them for the work they do for you and for taking you to the places you want.

  • When you are on the street, take a moment to observe the people around you, observe what each person is doing and notice the very different universe in which each person lives.

  • Stop for a moment and look at your hands, look at your palms and identify your veins, remember that blood is passing through at this moment, and that makes it possible for you to be alive.

  • Observe your body and realize that you have a first-person view of your body, as if you were the main character in a movie.

  • Take a breath and feel how deep the air enters your body.

Recognize the work your body does for you every day and be grateful for it. Allow yourself to connect with everyday life through your senses.

No matter how small and insignificant it may seem, this exercise will connect you with your reality and will bring you back to the present. Living in your thoughts of the future is what causes you dissatisfaction. That is what makes it so that no matter how much you achieve, nothing is ever enough; because you never properly taste anything but move on to the next thing. Don't get trapped in thoughts of the future and what will be, live in the present. Designate a period of time to prepare for tomorrow and then let it go, focus solely on today as it is all you really have.

Dissatisfaction derives from your inability to let go of tomorrow, stop living in the future and dedicate your thoughts to the present. Regardless of how much you achieve in life, nothing will ever be good enough if you are stuck living in the future chasing the next obstacle. Rather then truly tasting every experience of the present.

You feel like nothing is enough because you lost yourself in the vision of the future, you lost your contact with the present.

Focus! Remember that you are alive today.

When your mind takes you to the future, let your senses be the ones to bring you back to the present.

Enjoy today as if you were new on earth, practicing the look of wonder.

Love, Mel.
